Understanding Ceylon Rubies
Ruby is one of the world’s most famous and valuable coloured gemstones. Sri Lanka produces natural rubies for centuries, although they occur less frequently than sapphires.
At Ceylon Gem Atelier, we carefully select natural Ceylon rubies based on their colour, clarity, cut, size, treatment and overall character.
What Is Ruby Gemstone?
Ruby is the red variety of corundum, the same mineral family as sapphire. Its chemical formula is Al₂O₃ (aluminium oxide). Chromium gives ruby its characteristic red colour.
Fine rubies can range from pinkish red to vivid red and deep red. Colour, transparency and overall quality strongly influence their value.

Ceylon Ruby
Sri Lanka is best known for its sapphires, but the island also produces natural ruby and other corundum varieties. Ceylon rubies can show attractive red and pinkish-red colours.
When origin matters, appropriate laboratory testing can help determine whether a ruby comes from Sri Lanka.
What Makes a Ruby Valuable?
Several factors influence the value of a ruby:
Colour — Colour plays a major role in ruby value. Strong, vivid red colours are generally the most desirable.
Clarity — Natural inclusions are common in ruby. Their type, size and effect on appearance can influence value.
Cut — A well-proportioned cut can improve a ruby’s colour, brilliance and overall appearance.
Carat Weight — Fine rubies become increasingly rare as their size increases. Large, high-quality rubies can command significant prices.
Treatment — Heat treatment and other treatments can affect a ruby’s appearance and value. We clearly disclose the treatments.
Origin — Geographic origin can influence the value of certain rubies when a recognised laboratory supports the origin determination.
Ruby Gemstone Certification
Our gemstone certificates provides important information about a ruby, including its identity, weight, measurements, treatment and, where determined, geographic origin.
Depending on the gemstone and its value, you may obtain certificates from recognised Sri Lankan gemological laboratories such as NGJA and GIC.
